Divided Country, Divided Families? The Emigration from GDR to BRD in the familial remembrance of migrants and those left behind (DFG, 2012 - 2019)

The research project is looking at the topic of migrant-families from the GDR (Eastern Germany), that has so far only rarely been explored. The starting point of the research is the hypothesis that the experience of migrating from East to West Germany is not only dealt with individually but also in familial spaces.

The aim is to explore the interdependency between individual and family rememembrance/memory of the migration process and the cultural and family identity. Through intervies with emigrant families it is to be explored (1) how the east-west migration was experienced by the different generations and how the memory about it was passed on (2) what effects the emigration had on family relations between East and West and (3) how the emigrants locate themselves today.

Funded by the DFG (2012-2019)
